The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency's primary function is to provide wholesale electricity to its members, which they re-sell on the retail market. IMEA also sells power to other qualified utilities. Of its 31 members, 29 purchase wholesale electricity from the Agency. The IMEA's goal is to keep the members power costs low and to insulate them from the high prices that are increasingly common in the short-term power market.  In addition to its primary power supply function, IMEA also provides engineering, communications, and economic development services to its members. These include engineering consultation, state and federal legislative lobbying, load retention and new business location services, and various communication programs. IMEA recently opened a new headquarters building.  The new building employs “green-building” technology and features a variety of energy-saving options and systems, including a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system.
