                          Econ IL - Experience a Virtual Library of Lessons for Your Classroom with VE4!

                          Economics is the science of decision making.  Making decisions empowers students, raising the bar on student achievement. This workshop puts a library of over 1,400 printable/searchable hands-on economics, consumer economics and personal finance lessons into your hands.  If you are an IBEA member, teach any of the consumer education requirements, or teach business/marketing - this session is for you! 

                          Attend this 2-hour training session* and learn to navigate this user-friendly Virtual Economics 4.0 (VE4) CD that contains a library of printable publications, lesson plans, student handouts and tests, multi-media clips, concept quizzes, reference books and economic data. Teachers can search by content area, grade level, keyword, concept, publication and state or national standard. On-line lessons are also available as the online library continues to be populated.  As an integral part of the session, teachrs will be using the CD during the workshop to become familiar with some of the basic applications and to explore how VE 4.0 can be used to meet the National Standards for Business Education.

                          *Educators who attend the entire 2-hour training session are eligible to receive a complimentary copy of the VE4 CD ($99 value).  One VE4 CD per trained teacher. Spaces are limited!

                          Children's Discovery Museum Tour
                          See how the Children's Discovery Museum carries out their mission of "Inspiring the Love of Learning Through the Power of Play."  Learn about the exciting educational programs offered through the Children's Discovery Museum.  Hear how STEM is introduced to students.  The Museum exhibits are a celebration of exploration and discovery.  The Museum boasts over three floors of hands-on powerful play experiences that inspire the love of learning. This tour is from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  Meet in the lobby of the Marriott at 8:50 a.m. to depart. 

                          Administrator Academy 
                          Understanding the Common Core:  What Administrators Need to Know, Understand and Do
                          This session is a continuation of Wednesday's program.  If taken both days, Administrator Academy credit will be given, but attendance at this two hour stand-alone portion will only result in CPDU's.

                          Linking Standards, Assessment, and CTE
                          Never before have the demands for academic achievement been as pressing for educators and as imperative for students. In the standard’s driven curriculum, instruction, and assessment cycle, research overwhelmingly verifies that the most powerful way to increase student learning and motivation is through the use of quality formative assessments as part of a balanced assessment system. This keynote session will provide an overview of Common Core State Standards through their connection to a balanced assessment cycle necessary for today’s CTE students.

                          Assessment Literacy 101: Balancing Formative and Summative Assessment
                          This session is designed to explore the use of high-quality, classroom assessments as tools for enabling students to become confident, competent, lifelong learners capable of managing their ongoing academic success. Participants will be introduced to the researched-based approach of balancing high quality, student involved, formative assessments with building, district and/or state-wide summative assessments.

                          Non-Traditional Careers--A Look at the Possibilities
                          This session includes an overview of the recruiting and retention of nontraditional students into Career and Technical Education Programs of Study.  In addition, participants are introduced to electronic resources that assist in meeting state learning and common core standards.

                          Orientation to Health Science Careers:  A STEM Approach
                          This session will provide an overview of a new two-year health science orientation curriculum that provides the foundation for all pathways and programs of study in the health science career cluster.  Learn how a former EMT/Paramedic turned science teacher combines health occupations and medical terminology in a paperless classroom. Students jump-start career development by taking a 9th/10th grade course typically reserved for upper classmen. Hear how 8th grade parents gave a standing ovation when they learned students could earn college credit as 10th graders, CNA in 11th grade and Emergency Medical Responder Cert. … all prior to leaving high school.

                          iPad Basics for the CTE Classroom
                          Come wrap your hands around an iPad and have a chance to experience the basics! Explore a few Apps and share how Apps might be used in the CTE classrooms.

                          Maximizing Common Formative Assessments

                          As educators work in communities of best practice to ensure that the needs of all learners are being met, the development of common assessments as a tool for differentiation is essential. When teams of educators develop common assessments, they establish a consistent way to effectively monitor student learning, collectively respond to results, implement informed practice, and raise teaching and learning expectations. Participants will understand the rationale and process for using common assessments and review a variety of strategies and tools for building common assessments and including them in their planning.

                          Blended Learning for 21st Century Healthcare Careers
                          Come and experience HealthCenter 21 – The online healthcare curriculum resource that delivers regularly updated, engaging multimedia content with automated, continuous assessment. The online platform allows instructors to create a blended learning environment that is individualized for each student. Instructors can be more productive and graduates can enjoy success as healthcare professionals.

                          Office Update:  Welcome to the Clouds!
                          This hands-on session will provide the experienced Office user a showcase of the new features in Office especially Cloud Computing with Office Web Apps and SkyDrive, as well as a sneak-peak of what is next from Microsoft.  Learn about Backstage view, the new screen clipping tool, and new image editing tools.  From the new Excel sparklines to PowerPoint video enhancements, you will be able to transition smoothly and seamlessly to Office 2010, and see what is coming next, after this update session.

                          Response to Intervention: What is RtI? And How to Use It in Your Classroom

                          Response to Intervention (RtI) is an academic intervention method which provides early, effective identification and assistance to students who have difficulty learning in the classroom. This workshop will focus on the definition and application s of RtI strategies and implementations in the classroom and school.

                          CTE Data Comes to Life
                          Come learn about the Career and Technical Education data and how it is collected through the Illinois State Board of Education’s Student Information System.  It is your opportunity to see the format for student course assignments and reports available to assist schools in reviewing their data in a meaningful way.
                           
                          Jazz Up Your Classroom Presentations
                          Tired of your old powerpoints and presentations?  Want to make your own website for your students?  See examples of how teachers have used technology to make their classes fun and informative.  Learn what is available to “Jazz Up” your teaching activities.  

                          Creating a Website Using Google Sites
                          Learn how easy it is to create your own FREE website using Google Sites.  There are many templates available for you to use to get started and modify the website to suite your needs.  Attendees need to already have a free Google account setup that you can log into if you wish to participate in the hands-on website creation (go to google.com to create an account).  Attendees are also welcome to sit in and watch the site creation process.  We will setup a new website and get started on creating your own website content as time allows.  Bring your ideas for website content.

                          Measuring Success through Assessments and Certifications

                          To substantiate CTE’s role in effectively preparing students for today’s competitive workforce, programs need an assessment and credentialing/certification tool. This session will give an overview of the variety of certifications that are used at the Capital Area Career Center in order to prepare students for the workplace and to provide data and program outcomes.

                          Struggling to find ways to strengthen technology use in your class or office, then come see how novice users have implemented technology into the Career Center.  From professional development opportunities to classroom assessments, staff at the Center are working to maximize our efforts. 

                          COPE24 Parenting Skill Program
                          COPE24 Parenting Skill Program is a new innovative program targeting all youth.  Our goal is to reduce child abuse/neglect and teen pregnancy with future generations of parents. This program utilizes videos of actual parenting situations. Each video is approximately 5 minutes long. The teacher would begin the class by showing one video. The situation in the video will escalate to abuse, neglect, or dysfunction. The video is then stopped and the teacher can turn to the class and ask….what went wrong?                           Brain Based Learning/ Teacher Tool Box
                          You will be able to enrich your brain and your student’s brains after just one 50 minute workout.  The information is based on brain research related to memory, language and motivation.  This fast paced interactive session will provide an overview of the concepts which are critical to understanding how we learn, access memory and motivate our learners.

                          Trends Impacting CTE
                          This session will outline the trends that are impacting career and technical education and how these changes are influencing the education reform dialogue.  Issues including the integration of academics and CTE, common core standards and assessments, what it means to be college and career ready and the increasing role of national policy will be addressed.  The role of CTE in leading the reform dialogue will be highlighted as part of the discussion. 

                          Adopting the Common Core Standards to the CTE Classroom                   
                          Attendees will be introduced to a model for aligning the Common Core Standards to the CTE classroom curriculum.  The session will evolve as follows: Attendees will receive a brief introduction to the CC Standards and will learn to identify the ENG/LA and MATH Standards. Attendees will view TASKS from both ENG/LA & MATH, and will learn how to create a TASK using a Standards-Based process. They will leave with examples of Tasks.

                          Instructor duties, performance funding, and budget constraints can all be CONFUSING ~come learn about free technologies that can be implemented in your classroom to enhance student learning, ease instructor task list load, and present access to “Cloud” computing.

                          Literacy in the CTE classroom: Teaching Reading Comprehension in all Content Areas
                          Reading CTE textbooks for comprehension can be a challenge for students who struggle with reading. This workshop will focus on strategies to assist struggling readers improve comprehension skills and gain technical knowledge. Mark Oglesby, Fire Science Instructor, will demonstrate present strategies that have worked in his CTE class.

                          Windows 7
                          Windows 7:  Is technology changing so fast you can’t keep up?  You are already hearing talk about Windows 8 and you are thinking I am still using Windows XP or Vista.  This session will discuss the differences between XP and Vista as it migrated to Windows 7.  Some essential tips of Windows 7 will be demonstrated as well as helpful shortcuts shown to make you more effective in Windows 7.  Don’t fall behind on your technological skills, jump in and move forward!

                          Through this interactive session, participants will:
                          • Explore the Common Core Standards for Mathematics as they apply to Technology and Engineering courses
                          • Discuss how to use the Common Core Standards for Mathematics in selected application
                          • Develop plans for utilizing resources such as the CR-P lessons in developing learning events meeting the Common Core Standards for Mathematics
